The Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul began in France and the Motherhouse is there to this day in Paris. The international head of the Daughters of Charity, Sr. Evelyne Franc, is called the Superioress General and she lives in the Motherhouse in Paris. She is assisted by a General Council of Sisters representing the various language groups from countries where the Daughters serve.

Since the beginning, the Superior General of the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentian Priests) has also helped the Daughters of Charity to maintain their charism and carry out their mission in the church.

"Who Knows Tomorrow?" The Work of the Daughters of Charity through the eyes of Social Documentary Photographer peter lemieux

As an international community, you will find Daughters of Charity around the world. Someone who has come to know the Daughters well is Peter Lemieux, a social documentary photographer based in San Francisco, California. He has been documenting the work of the Daughters for seven years. The San Francisco Chronicle has a piece about Peter Lemieux entitled “Who Knows Tomorrow?” You can read the article about Peter, his work and the Daughters of Charity on the San Francisco Chronicle website.

We encourage you to visit Peter Lemieux’s website to view his photos and learn more about some of the work of the Daughters of Charity in Ethiopia. Be sure to see “Selamawit’s Unsettled Youth” and “Living in the Grave with the Dead” which, in addition to Peter’s photos, includes a moving multimedia presentation.
