Meet Sister Marta Goski, D.C.

I grew up in Canada, in a large family, was taught by three different communities of Sisters through grade school, high school and nursing school, and was very involved in church activities from adolescence on.  I dated and became engaged, but after a few months something made me break off the engagement.  Instead, my friend Rita and I headed off for California, having decided on San Francisco because we had several friends there.  Rita and I spent the first ten days doing all the tourist things, then decided to look for jobs in a Catholic hospital as operating room nurses.  We checked the phone book for hospitals with "Saint" in their title and made appointments at several.  As we walked up Market Street to one of them, we paused at a street corner to rest, glanced down the street and saw the sign, "Mary's Help Hospital".  I insisted that we had to go there, so on our way back we stopped in to see it.  Something in the lobby said to me, "This is it", so we made appointments for interviews the next day and were hired immediately.  I was distracted throughout the interview by the sight of the Sister in her big white hat.

My supervisor, Sr. Vincent Hanc, had a family whom she helped with their material needs.  She invited me to accompany her on her visits and we usually prepared food or other items to take with us.  As we were working on the supplies one day, she looked up at me and asked, "Do you think you'd like to be a Sister?"  To my utter surprise, I answered, "Yes."  The next thing I knew, I was in Sr. Mary Rose McPhee's office filling out papers. (Ironically, my godmother's name was McPhee, also.)  My parents were very pleased by my decision.
